Are you like most people who make a fitness related new years resolution? If you’re a part of the majority of those people, you would have stopped around February. Don’t look back on another frustrating year, let’s make this year your best one yet!
Here are some tips to help you achieve your goals!
1. AVOID The unrealistic goals
If you’re like me, you’ve set unrealistic goals at some point. There’s the classic “I’m going to workout EVERYDAY this whole year!” Setting the bar high can be a very good thing, but in this case, there are two reasons why I hate that goal (and others similar).
- There’s hardly any room for error. In a short amount of time (24 hours, if you take my example) you could have failed your new big goal. Obviously you could keep going and see how many days you can workout in a year, but most of us don’t work like that. We get frustrated on the fact that no matter what we do now we have failed our goal, so what’s the point anymore? Then the rest of the year we just “enjoy” life.
- Even if you had the tenacity for it, the unrealistic goals usually aren’t even healthy. Your body needs to recover. You should enjoy this fact, you get to take some days off!
2. Break the year down
Your year long goal is a long road, it’s hard to even see the end, and that gets exhausting. Break it down to weeks. When your big goal is broken down into smaller goals, you actually can achieve some SUCCESS sooner, and that feels good. You might fail some weeks, but others you’ll succeed and that will help you build momentum to fight through the next week, and the next, and the next after that. This prevents the “what’s the point anymore?” case from above. As humans we’re terrible at planning, so if you can plan one week at a time, you’ll find yourself much more successful at the end of the year.
3. Write out your goals!
When you don’t write our your goals, it’s easier to quit your goals when things get tough. Writing it down will help keep you accountable. And also prevent you from ever completely forgetting your goals if you slacked off on them.
4. Remember your ‘why’
For every goal you set, you should list out WHY you have that goal. It takes a lot of energy and mental strength to achieve fitness goals, and often our bodies don’t want to do anything or they really crave that tasty treat. Everything comes down to a decision between two things. If you don’t remember your why, it comes down to “relax and enjoy myself or put myself through pain.” I don’t know who would choose pain! There’s a reason you made that goal, and when it gets tough to hit the gym, look at your whys. If they’re good, they’ll help you get the motivation to get up and conquer your goals and be an inspiration to others!
